Sense8 Recap episode 2: I Am Also a We

Post by Tony Velez on Sat Aug 15, 2015 10:42 am

Today’s title drop is given to us by Nomi as she records an impassioned speech about Pride, which ends with ‘go fuck yourself [Thomas] Aquinas.”

We also get some insight into her past, as Amanita exposits that Nomi used to be a hacktivist.

Moving over to Will, we find him sitting next to Deshawn’s bedside and can we just move past this horrible subplot already? Anyway, this is as good a time as any to flashback into Will’s childhood, where he was apparently a juvenile delinquent. The irony that his father was a cop does not go unnoticed by anyone. I’m not sure if we’re supposed to sympathize with Will in this scene though. If I had just caught my son shoplifting, I’d have much the same reaction as Will’s dad.

Anyway, the flashback also shows us that Will is really good at getting himself out handcuffs. A skill I’m sure will never come in handy during the course of the series. Nope. I cannot see any situation in which this skill could be useful.

Obvious foreshadowing is obvious.

Anyway, back in the present, he’s looking into the mysterious disappearance of Daryl Hannah, but the security footage is suspiciously missing.

During Pride, Nomi is taking part in the Dikes on Bikes event of the parade when she suddenly locks eyes with Jonas as she’s taking a picture. The memory of Daryl Hannah’s death comes flooding back and she passes out.

She wakes up in a hospital bed alongside her sister and her cartoon villain mother.

Pictured: Nomi’s mother

Nomi’s mother is a bigot who doesn’t respect Nomi’s gender identity, delights in the idea of having her daughter under her thumb, dismisses Nomi’s blog (something which is deeply important to Nomi,) and is implied to have kicked Amanita out of the hospital. I get it. We’re supposed to hate her. Dial it back a notch or twelve. Jeez.

Anyway, Nomi’s mother introduces her to Dr. Metzger, who tells Nomi that she has a rare brain disease and that the only possible way to cure it is with a lobotomy.

Moving on to Lito (remember him? It’s okay if you don’t. All he’s done so far is dry hump the wall of his trailer,) he’s in a big fancy Hollywood premiere with his date, the stunningly beautiful Daniela. He plays the part of the movie star so convincingly well that I’m starting to roll my eyes. We also get a bit where we find out his father was Spanish, which I guess was thrown in there to justify the casting of a Spanish actor as a Mexican character.

Meanwhile, in Mumbai, we finally get to meet Rajan Rasal, and yeah, he’s pretty much as perfect as everybody says he is. He recounts the story of his first date with Kala and then surprises her by performing a dance from a movie she liked. The dance (the Mehndi Dance?) was beautifully shot and choreographed. Truly an amazing scene. Kala’s friend/sister/doesn’t matter speaks for all of us when she tells Kala that she’ll marry Rajan if no one else wants to. We also get to meet Rajan’s father Manendra, who is…kind of a dick. He spends the evening throwing shade at Kala’s father and Indian customs and just making everyone uncomfortable in general, myself included.

But then we catch up with Lito and Daniela after the premiere. Daniela says some very catty things about Lito’s costar that leave me feeling uncomfortable. Lito mentions that he has a talent for lying, which I’m sure isn’t foreshadowing anything whatsoever, and then…he rejects Daniela’s advances?

Last episode, he rejected a costar because he said his heart belonged to someone else. I was sure it was Daniela, but….what? There’s something suspect about all this.

Ah, but who cares about that? Wolfgang is having a hot sweaty one-night stand. And we get to see his bare ass. That’s much more important than whatever’s going on with Lito. After his little escapade, Wolfgang goes to an Indian café where he sees a vision of Kala in her gorgeous outfit and he’s absolutely mesmerized by her. I smell a love triangle!

And now we find ourselves back with Lito as he gets home and greets his beloved…a man named Hernando (Alfonso Herrera.) And…okay…I didn’t see that coming. But it doesn’t matter because Hernando is amazing and beautiful and supportive and snarky and he reads too much into dumb action movies and I’m already a little bit in love with him. Then he expresses contempt over not being able to go to premiers with Lito and I just...it's too much…I can’t even.

Anyway, Daniela shows up, completely oblivious to any of this and fully determined to sleep with Lito. She practically forces herself into Lito’s apartment and wonders aloud what Lito’s problem is. As soon as she steps into the bedroom, Hernando answers the question for her by saying “The problem is, honey, that you don’t have a cock.”

Daniela…does not react like Hernando and Lito (and I) thought she would. Instead of being hurt or disgusted, she’s absolutely ecstatic. The scene ends like this:

And, okay, I kinda love all of them right now.

In the decidedly less perfect land of London, Riley (hey, remember her?) has to flee her apartment. Okay, well, it was nice catching up with you Riley. See you next episode.

In San Francisco, the hospital staff has taken to locking Nomi’s door, forcing her to ingest some medication, and refusing to let her leave. They claim it’s all standard procedure.

Sure, and I'm the Queen of England.

Nomi starts seeing visions of Jonas, but isn’t sure if he’s actually there or if it’s all part of the supposed brain disease she has. She finally gets a call from Amanita – who has to sneak around and use a nurse friend’s contact to even speak to Nomi – and is able to confirm that Jonas is actually a real person through the handy picture Nomi took prior to passing out. Before she hangs up, Amanita promises Nomi that she’d rather burn the hospital to the ground than let anyone lay a finger on Nomi.

I know I’m using this picture a lot, but damn it, it keeps being relevant.

Back in Chicago, Officer Will (who is still a thing, I guess) finds himself quickly becoming one of the least interesting characters in the show. To remedy this, he decides that he needs to get the main plot rolling. Fortuitously, a representative of the CIA shows up and just happens to warn his unit about a ‘terrorist’ named Jonas Maliki. How convenient.

That night, Will has a headache and goes to a grocery store where he of course runs into Jonas. Wait, wasn’t Jonas in San Francisco Pride at the beginning of this episode? How much time passed between then and now? I could have sworn it was only one day? Did he see Nomi’s accident, shrug, and get on the next flight to Chicago? Wouldn’t it have been in his best interest to bust Nomi out of the hospital? I’m confused.

Anyway, Jonas provides Will with some handy exposition that is still too vague to mean much of anything to anyone, and then gets promptly run over by Will’s car. The end.

Tune in next time when we answer the all-important question: where the hell were Sun and Capheus this episode?

I just loved the scene with Daniela, Hernando, and Lito drinking in bed. That was just amazing.

Love your voice and your use of images. Smile

I love Daniela, she reminds me of one of my sisters who would probably have the same reaction in the same situation.
