To kick things off, does anyone know a good means of starting a petition? I wanna try petitioning DC to do a 'Wonder Woman day'

Wonder Woman Discussion Thread Empty Re: Wonder Woman Discussion Thread

Change.org seems to be the primary place for online petitions. I believe the focus is meant to be petitioning goverments for laws or investigations, but I see people putting up all sorts of stuff (I once saw a petition one guy made to get his best friend to play Metroid Prime, a petition I can totally get behind).

So, I got caught up on Legend of Wonder Woman and I love it. I would be absolutely okay with this comic somehow superceding the New 52 version that started with Azzarello's run as the main Earth version of Wonder Woman and her mythology.

That said, I had a few niggles about this interpretation of Amazon society, as well as a few points where I thought they improved from previous versions. The big one for me is that I wish the gods they represented weren't the male ones. One of the best elements of the Perez version was where the Amazons were formed by a collection of goddesses, who went out and made the Amazons on their own (without any help from the male gods who thought it wouldn't do any good). Here, each of the immortal Amazons appears to represent a specific god to the Amazonian council, and so far all the mentioned ones are male (including Hippolyta's god, Zeus). This just doesn't feel quite right to me.

Secondly, and I believe Martian Manhunter has already mentioned this, but I am disappointed in the lack of scientific advancement. On the one hand I understand that it complicates the Amazons a bit, but the Amazons without advanced healing technology (whether it be magic or science based) seems to undercut the accomplishments of the Amazons as a society. From the look of elements that we know will appear later, the book looks to be borrowing a lot of classic Wonder Woman elements, so the Purple Ray may still make a future appearance, but I kind of wish we could get it confirmed already.

Third, the lack of Aphrodite. It was Nuuni who tipped me off to how important Aphrodite was the Golden Age Wonder Woman's mythology (and once you realize that, huge chunks of Wonder Woman's mythology make a whole lot more sense, like the clay baby origin's ties to the Pygmalion myth, and the idea that Aphrodite represents love (of all forms), and that Ares, Aphrodite's husband, is the ultimate rival God to the Amazons), but she's fallen to the wayside in a lot of more recent interpretations of Wonder Woman's origin. She could, however, still show up, and I really hope she does.

Fourth, and this is kind of a direct follow up of the previous points, but this version so far seems to stray away from the general concept of 'alternate history' as much as it can. It hasn't dealt too specifically with many of the myths the Amazons are associated with, but to me one of the big things that makes Wonder Woman's whole mythology work is when you emphasize that it is an alternate history retelling of traditional Greek mythology. That's how you go from the 'traditional' barbarian warrior women Amazons to the peace seeking scientist utopians of Wonder Woman lore. That element feels like it needs to be there to really make all of it mesh (and it helps cover all the previous points), and this comic has not really delved into that. This is just a 9 issue miniseries, but they've spent a lot of time establishing this version of Amazon society and mythology, so I feel like they could've done it.

All that said, I am really loving it so far, and there's been a lot of things I like that they did with it. The way they're handling the immortality of the Amazons is an interesting new approach that satisfies a lot of logistical issues, as well as makes their society feel a lot more grounded and relatable. I love the way the Amazons interact with each other, it lacks a lot of the constant 'conflict caused by misunderstanding' that a lot of other versions tend to play with; someone has an issue with someone else, they voice it, and both parties tend to get the heart of the issue as opposed to making endless drama about it. It's refreshing. The way the Amazon society in general is set up feels a lot more realistic and believable, like a society that is ultimately peaceful and progressive but not inherently utopian and therefore 'too perfect'. As much as I love the utopian version of Themyscira, I also understand how a perfect society can be difficult to write. I love the lack of emphasis on the gods themselves; I think the Post Crisis versions biggest issue was that the gods were too often the focus of the story and that meant that Diana herself often played second fiddle to the mythology aspect and she really didn't get much of a unique rogues gallery (even though she has one of the better ones out there, if people would just take the time to use them). As it is, the gods seem to be pretty indirectly involved, and they're direct involvement in Amazon affairs feels like a very rare thing, which is a good tone to help keep the emphasis on Wonder Woman and not on the more familiar Greek mythology. Bottom line, I think there's a lot of good here that has strayed from a lot of traditional interpretations and has updated the mythos to better work in our modern era without compromising what the character and her mythology stand for.

Also, the artwork is gorgeous. Excellent job all around.
