Year of Wonder Woman Empty Year of Wonder Woman

Post by Nuuni Nuunani Thu Dec 24, 2015 9:37 pm

In celebration of Wonder Womans upcoming 75th anniversary (October 25th, 2016) I wanted to do my own part in celebrating the grand day by doing a year long character piece in which I once a day name a character from Wonder Womans mythos who either contributes something great to the mythos, or serves as an examination as to an aspect of the character.

I have been posting these once a day in the 'Things I saw today' threat but not to long ago, it was pointed out to me that the Disqus comments are a pain for archiving, so I had been pondering how best to collect these articles until it dawned on me that TMS has a perfectly good forum for archiving these pieces.

So, I will be using this thread for the archiving of characters in Wonder Womans mythos, and if it occurs to me, I might try adding material to specific character pieces at a later date.

I ask that readers do NOT post things in this thread so I can keep track of things better.
Instead, I invite people to go to this thread for their Wonder Woman commenting needs: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Also, for those curious, this is the source I am using for that specific date for Wonder Womans birthday. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Year of Wonder Woman Empty Re: Year of Wonder Woman

Post by Nuuni Nuunani Thu Dec 24, 2015 9:58 pm

Day 1: Queen Hippolyta: Mother of Diana, queen of the amazons. She is based on the mythological character of the same name and role and likewise, wore the girdle of invincibility which made her invulnerable.

A strong and capable character, she has been consistently portrayed as a wise ruler who prioritizes her peoples well being over all else. She had links from her girdle removed to create the magic lasso, showing her devotion to her daughter and willingness to lend her strength to Diana to support her. Time and time again, she has shown her boundless love for Wonder Woman.

An interesting aspect to the character in the golden age is that her girdle of invincibility was not destroyed to reforge the magic lasso. Rather, pieces of it were removed to create the lasso, allowing the girdle and its magical properties to remain intact.
The girdle itself grants the bearer complete and total invulnerability to any injury, and makes it impossible for the bearer to sustain injury.
The power of the girdle is so great, that it shares this power with those the bearer recognizes as her own people. Thus, every amazon of Paradise Island shares a lesser form of the girdles power which while not granting them full invulnerability, made it so that no mortal wound may befall them, though a blow may still work to render one unconcious.

This combined with the blessing of immortality on the part of Aphrodite, and Dianas invention of the Purple Ray, made the amazons as a whole, an immortal people who should be invulnerable to mass fridging. A concept that later periods would almost gleefully retcon away.

Another fascinating aspect of the character was just how powerful she was initially. Marston was a staunch feminist who not only praised Women for their capabilities, but he also saw mothers as a source of boundless strength. Thus, were Diana and Hippolyta to duel or engage in a contest of strength, or wits. Hippolyta would triumph ten times out of ten, for even Wonder Woman was outmatched by a mother whose virtues outstripped even her own. Alas, she swore an oath to spend her eternal life on Paradise Island in the service of the gods and to protect her people, she would have probably saved the world with her might.

This strays somewhat from the mythos in question, but in the mythos of Shazam and Captain Marvel, when the great wizard Shazam declared Mary Batson to be Billys equel in strength of character and purity of heart and destined to stand alongside Billy as a defender of mankind. He granted Mary Marvel her own set of gods whose powers made her Captain Marvels equel.
She borrowed her strength from Hippolyta, whose might rivaled even that of Hercules, for whom Billy borrowed his own strength.

In Post Crisis, in order to de age Diana and make her a younger and more experienced persona, they established Hippolyta as originally donning the banner of Wonder Woman in WW2, and having the adventures credited towards Diana in her golden age. It was an interesting direction for the character. Especially as it lead to her being a member of both the Justice League and the Justice Society.

Without Hippolyta, there could be no beginning to Diana's story, and it was naturally fitting to begin the year with the woman who started it all.

Day 2: Etta Candy
One of the most important characters in Wonder Womans mythos, Etta is also the most overlooked. If Wonder Woman was created to symbolize womens liberty and what women could do if unrestrained by society, then Etta symbolizes the average woman. The feminist. When Wonder Woman, the symbol of womens rights is imperiled, it is Etta Candy leading her own feminist movement in the form of the Holliday girls (Young women who are seeking higher education in an era where that was still frowned on.) to fight for Wonder Womans freedom.

She is not the classic definition of beauty, but she knows herself to be beautiful and has the confidence and assurance of someone who is not weighed down by societies perceptions. Be it gangsters, nazis, aliens or even gods, Etta has never been afraid to lead the Holliday Girls to fight at Wonder Womans side to make the world a better place.

Day 3: Steve Trevor
One of the earliest characters in Wonder Womans mythos, Steve is also one of the characters that few people seem to quite have an understanding of. While also a member of the military and wearing the trappings of a man of action, Steve is meant to show just how fragile an actual human being is. He gets in a plane crash, it takes him months to recover. A building falls on him, he breaks his legs from the event. He takes a blow to the head, he needs to go to the hospital for a concussion. Steve Trevor is more a deconstruction of the man of action than he is a representative of it. And shows that people aren't just made out of rubber, able to bounce back from any trauma on the spot.

As a love interest to Wonder Woman, Steve brings alot to the table. He recognizes women are just as capable as men (Back in the 40s, when that was not the norm) And takes offront to asshats who act otherwise. He recognizes Wonder Womans greater knowledge and authority, and will always follow along with her orders. And most importantly, he trusts her without question.

While some love interests are constantly trying to unmask the superhero, or out their secret identity, Steve has no interest in trying to force or take anything from her. Instead, he trusts Wonder Woman, knowing she has a good reason for everything she does.

To take it further, I suspect that Steve was Marstons idea of a male feminist. Someone who supports women and does what he can to aid them in their cause, but stays out of the spotlight, so that she can take the lead.

Day 4: Eve Brown
While not the most important character in Diana's mythos, Eve is integral in establishing a central part of Wonder Womans character that makes her unique from any other hero.

Younger sister to Steves secretary Lila, Eve was a love struck fool who fell for a nazi spy and agreed to help him get his hands on secrret government information, and kill Steve in the process.

After Wonder Woman stopped her and saved Steve, Diana turned around and gave Eve a second chance. She convinced the young woman that one shouldn't blindly commit ill deeds in the name of love, and that used her influence to ensure Eve wouldn't face criminal charges.
Eve Brown would go on to enroll in Holliday College, and join Etta's band of young women working to better the world.

That right there is an example of Wonder Woman. She doesn't just rescue people. She redeems them. And convinces them to join the side of good and strive to better mankind. This is not a singular case either. Wonder Woman has a greater track record for rehabilitating her enemies and convincing them to turn over a new leaf than any other superhero to date. On top of that, it actually sticks.

The reason Wonder Woman does not kill is because she knows that anyone can be made to see the error of their ways. She has made it happen countless times.

Day 5: Al Kale
A greedy money hungry agent, Al Kale is the classic example of someone who tries to milk a talent for all their worth and then make a run with the money when they get the chance.

A really minor character who is little more than a foot note in Wonder Womans mythos, Al Kale contributed one very important thing to the character.
He gave Wonder Woman her name.
When Diana came to the states, she dropped off Steve at a hospital so he could continue recuperating, and quickly assimilating the local culture, she concluded that she needed to find a way to make money and happened to come across a gang of bank robbers. Stopping them (Of course) Diana displayed her reflexes, strength and speed, with Al Kale watching and offering Diana a job as a performer.

Thus, Diana became an entertainer at a theater, deflecting bullets, performing feats of strength and agility, all under the name of Wonder Woman. A moniker which Al Kale came up with to sell to the crowds.
And all of this had an interesting effect. For while few people believed she was the real thing, her feats made the newspapers and she became an international sensation to the point that everyone knew her name and visage. (Which also had the benefit of villains mistaking her for a circus act and lowering their guard early on in her career)
So while he tried to rob Wonder Woman, fought kicking in screaming to hold onto every last penny and in the end only forked over 5% of what Wonder Woman made, he did serve the purpose of giving Diana the name of Wonder Woman

Day 6: Diana Prince
No, not that Diana Prince. The Original Diana Prince!

When Princess Diana came to the states, she had no identity as a citizen, and this made it difficult for her to do things like get a job at a hospital, or work at a military base.

Fortunately for her, she happened across a nurse who just so happened to be her splitting image WHO ALSO HAPPENED TO HAVE THE NAME OF DIANA!
The woman was sad because her fiance was being forced to transfer to south america and didn't have the money for her to travel with him, and Diana offered the nurse all of the money she made as a performer to pay her way, in exchange for her identity.

And this is how Diana was able to get a job as a nurse without having to go through medical school. (Even if she happened to be a supurb physician)

While not the most plausible of scenarios, I like the whole scenario because its a clever way to get around the question of why nobody would ever be suspicious of Diana just popping up out of nowhere.

Day 7: Doctor Poison [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

The first villain in Wonder Womans rogue gallery, Doctor Poison was a spymaster and sabatour who happened to be one of the worlds greatest minds in the field of chemistry.

A reoccurring theme throughout the characters early appearances was a reliance on behavioral modification.. Drugs that would effect people mentally and compel them to do something to a given response. The fact that this is a villain who is using behavior modifying drugs should probably be telling in regards to William Marstons views on them.

Another aspect of the character is the question of gender. In the original appearance, Wonder Woman unmasked Doctor Poison to reveal a woman, by the name of Princess Maru.

The reason for this is unknown, though the popular theory for this is that Doctor Poison, wanting to join the field of medicine which was harshly scewed against women, crossdressed in order to acquire an education and maintained the disguise least they be outed and disbarred.

Another theory is that Marston was trying to in the unmasking, make a statement that the greatest scentific minds were not necessarily men. And given Marstons views, this is quite probably.

Personally, I prefer to think of Doctor Poison as Trans. Even if the original quite probably wasn't. It is my dearest hope that either the current or a future reboot of DC will give us a trans Doctor Poison.

Day 8: Lila Brown
Sister to the former villain Eve Brown, Lila's contributions to Wonder Womans legacy come more in regards to Will Marston than Wonder Woman.

For in one of the earliest stories, Lila Brown was covering up for her sister Eve and in order to determine which of the people at the base was guilty, Wonder Woman pulled out a systolic blood pressure test, better known as the early version of the lie detector to prove Lila's falsehood.

This was the creator of the lie detector test bringing his invention to life in comic books.

And true to its nature, it proved Lila's falsehood and led to the truth becoming known~

Day 9: Metalla
Greatest of the Amazonian scientists and crafters, Metalla by command of her queen at the urging of the Godess Aphrodite, took Hippolyta's girdle of invincibility, and reforged it into the magic lasso.

It says amazing things about the talents Amazons have that they have the sheer ability to make invisible planes, telepathic communicators, a fog that obscures the island from any form of sonar or visual sight, and on top of all that, take a mystical artifact forged by the gods themselves, and refashion it until it has completly different properties.

The Amazons were created as a brilliant and advanced society. Capable of performing feats with science centuries before their time.

In this particular case, the lasso was not originally a lasso of Truth. The lasso's original powers allowed it to compel those bound by it to do whatever the holder commands. It was granted to Wonder Woman because of anyone in the world, she was deemed the only one capable of posessing such power without becoming corrupted by it.

Thus, the magic lasso was Wonder Womans greatest asset, allowing her to resolve problems without the loss of lives, and granting her a tool which made her quest for peace far easier.

Later writers would weaken the lasso, making it so it could only compel the truth. Which would eventually come to be seen as the canonical version of its abilities.

Even when later writers such as Simone attempted to add to its abilities by making it move to Diana's thoughts, peer into peoples souls in a styling reminiscent of Ghost Rider and sense evil, the lasso's status as a truth telling tool remained. Which serves as an interesting testement to the legacy of Marston and his work with the lie detector.

But none of this would be possible were it not for Metalla, an Amazonian scientist who rebuilt a magical girdle of invincibility and turned it into a magic lasso.

Day 10: Baroness Paula Von Gunther
Austrian royal who settled in America, The Baroness was a dark reflection of Wonder Woman who stood for everything that Wonder Woman opposed.

Unparalleled spy master, she led Nazi intelligence and terrorist efforts in the states, and commanded numerous spies, goons and supervillains such as Doctor Poison in an effort to bring the country to its knees in a war that would kill millions.

Her greatest ability though was the talent to bend people to her will. She was a villain who merrily subjugated women, brainwashing them into being subservient and convinced them they were worthless and that they only lived to serve her bidding. She saw Love as something to be twisted and manipulated. And peace as an illusion. She did not care for the plight of her fellow woman, caring only about herself and happy to see others subjugated so long as she stood on top.

A mere mortal, her brilliant tactical mind and talent for manipulation made her one of Wonder Womans greatest enemies. But even that would not last for as one of Diana's greatest triumphs, she convinced the Baroness to turn over a new leaf and swear her life in service of love and peace on one of the Amazons colony islands.

While Superman and Batman still struggle with their greatest enemies in an effort to arrest them, Wonder Woman rehabilitated her mortal nemesis so she might live a life of peace at last.

Day 11: Mala
In the golden age, Mala was the greatest of the amazonian warriors second only to Wonder Woman, and even then only because of Diana's superior strength. When Queen Hippolyta has a special task such as overseeing the rehabilitation of criminals, she entrusts Mala to the task.

She was also head over heels in love for Wonder Woman.

Marston was never able to come out and directly say it, but he was never shy about making it crystal clear that Wonder Woman was not straight, and that she had lovers among the amazons. With Mala being one of them. Even when Diana chose Steve in the end, Mala wanted to run off to try and be with Diana, even at risk of banishment from the isle, only to be stopped by Diana who did not want Mala to make such a sacrifice for her sake.

Malas greatest contribution to Wonder Womans mythos is revealing Diana's bisexuality.

day 12: Gloria Bullfinch
A one shot character, Gloria Bullfinch was a wealthy woman who owned a chain of stores catering in jewelery, fashion and other high end items. She also handily represents one of the more central topics to Marston villains, and Wonder Womans use of the Lasso.

Gloria would hire women to work at her stores for the image and she would pay them as little as possible, without granting them breaks of any sort, and expecting overtime from them lest they be fired and replaced on the spot. Meanwhile, she would recline back in her lavish penthouse and revel in her own wealth.

Gloria perfect example of privilege, one of the great evils in Marstons run on Wonder Woman. A concept which instills callousness in regards to others and a blindness to the suffering of others.

She also serves as an example of just how Wonder Woman would use her lasso.

While Batman would have threatened and intimidated, or Superman would have busted heads, Wonder Woman instead used her magic lasso which back in the golden age could command anyone to do anything, and commanded Gloria Bullfinch to hire herself at one of her stores and think she was a normal middle wage citizen by the name of Ruth Smith for the period of one week. Over the course of that week, Gloria would suffer from the long hours and lack of even a lunch break, all for a pitifully small sum of money that would barely be enough to eat off of, much less live.

When the week passed, Gloria realized with horror the way she was treating her employees and endeavored to increase their pay, grant them breaks and treat the employee as someone of value.

The lasso at the time would be used by Wonder Woman as a means of teaching people. Of allowing them to learn from their mistakes and better themselves. Of course, the power to command anyone to do anything is an incredible power, which is why it had limitations.
1. Aphrodite bid that only Wonder Woman could use it, deeming her the only person in all of the world pure enough to use it for the betterment of mankind.

2. Wonder Woman, concerned about the dangers such a power posed if corrupted, tied herself up with the magic lasso and commanded herself to only use it for good.
Thus, the lasso became an aid for Wonder Woman to teach criminals a lesson and help them learn to be better people. Sure it is a little over powered, but no more so than Batman being able to outthink anything or Superman being able to beat up anything. Wonder Woman will always be there to lead humanity on the right path.

Day 13: Aphrodite
Back in the golden age, Aphrodite was the patron goddess of the Amazons, who the Amazons followed dutifully, and followed her views.
For under Marston, Aphrodite was not only a goddess of love, she was a goddess of ethics. Aphrodite taught her followers that it was better to approach ones enemies with love and understanding, than hostility and suspicion. And thus, she is responsible for the core precepts of the Golden Age Amazons. Wonder Woman included.

For while the Amazons were unmatched in both physical and mental prowess, it was Aphrodite and her teachings which instilled in them a set of ethics which maintained that taking a life is never the solution, and that anyone can be redeemed.

And Aphrodite is an interesting deity to focus upon. Goddess of love aside, she is the oldest of the Olympians, and the only one not born of Chronus, having instead been born of the sky and the sea. And like the Greek Myth of Pygmalion, Aphrodite is the one responsible to giving life to the clay child. Marston put alot of thought into her role in Wonder Woman.

What is especially interesting is who she is in relation to Diana. For the role of religion in comics is not something that comes up very often. Especially in relation to how it shapes who someone is. Here we have a superhero in the form of Wonder Woman whose philosophy is built upon the foundations of what her goddess taught her. And this is not simply a 'go out and beat up criminals' But a deity who is bidding their champion to bring about peace and understanding to the world. It is rare that the subject comes up in comics, and rarer still when it doesn't involve the modern day equivalent of a flaming sword to declare judgment.

Day 14: Queen Desira
Ruler of Venus, Queen Desira was actually introduced in the JSA, as a follower of Aphrodite who encountered Wonder Woman. She would migrate to Wonder Womans title, and become a reaccuring character who went on to introduce two of the least used elements of Wonder Womans mythos.

Wonder Woman has a great many villains and a far larger number of adventures which take her into space. Of the Justice League, she actually spent the most time in space over anyone until Hal saw a greater emphasis on visiting his fellow Lanterns. Queen Desira, being more aware of conflicts across the cosmos, would occasionally contact Wonder Woman, and get her assistance in dealing with threats on other planets such as Eros.

Wonder Womans universe was one where enlightened societies were aplenty, and Aphrodite was known by many.

The other interesting facet that Queen Desira introduced into Wonder Womans mythos was that of Astral Projection. This was a trick that would be used by hero and villain alike to get someone to a location without need for transportation and with a push for expediency. Before Wonder Woman used her jet or kangaroos to get about, this was the best way to travel.
How it would work is that by leaving ones body, their physical form would lie unconscious in suspended animation as though they were sleeping, allowing their souls to travel, to another location and take on a physical form which would act as their real bodies, with the need to eat and so forth. If either their physical form or astral form died, they were finished.

Astral projection was an interesting element to Wonder Woman which really out to be explored more. It made for interesting storytelling, and its something wholly unique to the character of Wonder Woman which no other character short of Sandman has ever even taken a look at.

Day 15: Hylo Goulash
A prince from Hungary, Hylo was a one note villain who fit into the catagory of 'priviliage and classism' based villains. In this case, he was a nazi trying to win the heart of Etta Candy as a means of getting onto her families oil ranch, and sabotaging it as her family alone apparently accounts for more than half of the oil production in the country.

When he sets fire to the oil, Etta uses an Amazonian invention to contact Wonder Woman known as the mental radio. A feat of either technological or magical wonder which Wonder Woman can use to send telepathic messages which the device picks up and transmits into a video phone call which can be heard by anyone listening on the other end.
While Etta is usually on the recieving end of calls from Diana, this has also been a means used by the Amazons such as Queen Hippolyta to contact Diana so they can stay in touch. Whether all Amazons have the ability to telepathically message one another with these devices or if it is just something Diana and Hippolyta can do was not quite clear, but it is interesting to note that whenever Darnell or Trevor need to contact Wonder Woman, they would phone up Etta and ask her to use her mental radio to contact Diana to let her know.

Thus, we have Wonder Womans equivalent of the Bat signal. And a far more efficient one at that, as it can also be used by Diana to call for assistance in situations where it would be otherwise impossible.

Day 16: Queen Cura, daughter of Ayar
One of the fun things about having a character who hails from a secret presumably lost civilization is that your setting a precedent for lots of the things to be hiding around for anyone to find. ^^

In this case, a collection of secret mountains in South America nestled in a secret valley, containing a secret city containing a secret nation of presumably lost Incans.

At no point do they actually reveal what the cities name is, but its key most notable feature is a giant temple the size of the great Giza pyramid, made from solid gold and dedicated to the god Inti. So I feel pretty confident in assuming this is El Dorado.

Cura was the greatest warrior in the city, last remaining heir of her father and after Diana stopped a murder plot on her life, Cura took the throne at Wonder Womans behest, proving herself to be an able ruler.

I think a really fun Wonder Woman run could just involve Wonder Woman playing diplomat and traveling to all of these secret cities and countries, establishing political ties with Paradise Island until they form their own secret United Nations. It would be quite fun I imagine.

Oh and just to add, Wonder Woman can speak fluent Incan. Because of course she can.

Day 17: Blue Snowman
Blue Snowman is a curious character in that he is more relevent now, than he was upon his creation.

Born Byrna Brilyant, His father Doctor Brilyant was a genius scientist who was working on an invention known as blue snow and died before completing it. Picking up his fathers work and perfecting it, Byrna invented blue snow and became one of DCs most under appreciated supervillains.

This might be perhaps, because the Snowman has never thought big. Upon creating a weather machine to distribute the blue snow and an an army of flying robotic duplicates, the Snowmans plan is to...Move into a town, smother it in snow, and force the inhabitants to fork over all of their money and fortune before freezing the town entirely and wandering off to repeat the process.

The villain was motivated purely by greed, and was created to symbolize those resource magnates who would roll into a small town to collect resources such as coal, natural gas and oil, but care so little of the locals and the environment that they leave the entire region uninhabitable and just leave the place an uninhabitable wasteland when they cannot leech anything more from the area.

However, this overlooks just how incredible and brilliant the Blue Snowman really is.
Putting aside the weather machine and the mechanized suit, and the army of flying robots, the Blue Snowman has perfected one of the greatest scientific achievements in human history.

A snow which lowers the temperature in an area to zero, it cannot be melted even with an open flame or even a jet engine. And if someone injects the snow, they take on a blue coloration, and fall into a suspended animation during which they are perfectly preserved.
The stasis treatment can be induced by soaking something in the chemical formula that makes up the blue snow, and the process is permanent unless someone makes use of the Blue Snowmans secret chemical mixture designed specifically to reverse the process.

We have someone whose invented a means of reversing global warming. Someone who makes permanent food preservation a reality. Someone whose invention makes stasis a reality, which can be used to treat patients, or turn space exploration into an achievable goal.
And they instead use it to rob banks and hold towns hostage.

Also, the Blue Snowman is easily the most powerful cold based villain in the DC universe.
Mister Freeze can be defeated with a blow torch.
Captain Colds cold gun can be overpowered with simple friction.
Killer Frost loses her powers when encountering enough heat
and so on and so on.
Blue Snowman is the only ice based villain whose ice and snow cannot be melted. Its completely fire proof, and nothing can chip through it save for the formula which only the Blue Snowman knows of. Add that to the mechanical suit, the army of Snowman robots, and the weather machine which can control the weather in a fifty mile radius (distributing the blue snow across said region.) and you have an incredible threat.

Year of Wonder Woman Empty Re: Year of Wonder Woman

day 18: Queen Marya of Eros
Ruler of the planet Eros, Marya was one of many female leaders whom Diana would encounter over the course of her adventures.

One of the many planets that Diana would visit, Eros was a planet with a single unified government ruled by a queen who held dominion over all. The planet had done away with crimes of murder and theft, instituting a policy in which upon reaching adulthood, every citizen goes to 'prison' for a period of six years. The prison in question being in actuality a sort of retreat where 'prisoners' were expected to follow the orders of their superiors and do what they were told, but were otherwise allowed to use their time however they wish, be it undertaking sporting events, or conducting scientific research.

When released from 'prison' they would be required to act as responsible and productive members of society whose responsibility being to tell others what to do and to focus on the happiness of others over onself.

Oh, and on this planet, you ask someone out by carrying around a fishing pole with a lasso on the end. Or in other words, using a pick up line!

Marya was an able ruler who had a happy population who actually preferred to be imprisoned over being free. And would actually reward people by offering them prison time.
A really surreal queen and planet which just shows the kind of thing that writers tragically ignore.

Day 19: Hard Candy
Father of Etta Candy, Hard Candy is a professional texan who embodies just about everything you have ever heard about Texas. Former Sherif/prospector turned ranch owner and oil magnate, Hard Candy always goes around with a handle bar mustache, a ten gallon hat and a pair of six shooters on his belt.

Producing half of the oil in the country, and owning a ranch of unbelievable proportion, Hard Candy is quite possibly one of the wealthiest people in the DC universe.

A nice aspect to the character is how much he dotes on his daughter, doing anything she asks. (Which is also how Etta and the Holliday girls can find a means of traveling thousands of miles across the world unaided without worrying about expenses.) And his home in Texas makes for the perfect locale whenever the stories take on a more wild western flair.

Oh and for those who have had trouble picturing how Etta talks, the entire family speaks in a very big and loud Texan accent.

Wonder Woman character of the day
Day 20: Bobby Lee
A young lad who is friends with Steves niece Ginger, and brother of intelligence clerk Sally Lee, Bobby is a seven year old lad whose favorite hero in all the world is Wonder Woman.

Having collected posters and newspaper clippings of her time as a performer and desperate to see the Wonder Woman movie. (Which in the Wonder Woman mythos, hit theaters in 1943) Bobby is a young lad who speaks nothing but adoration and delight at the adventures of Wonder Woman and her acts of daring do. And when his greatest wish comes true, the chance to see Wonder Woman herself, the young lad is beside himself with joy at the chance to meet his idol.

I cannot help but find Bobby to be a wonderful treat, who goes to show the sillyness of trying to classify heroes by gender, when the ones who idolize the heroes love them regardless. I cannot help but wonder just how many children will go see the upcoming Wonder Woman movie when it arrives in theaters.

Day 21: Fir Balsam

The Wonder Woman equivalent to a Christmas story, the story opens with Lieutenant Steve Trevor and second lieutenant war nurse Diana Prince are on a mountain top overlooking a small villiage, due to reports of nazi activity in the area when Diana notices a tree by the name Fir Balsam narrating our christmas story.

The tree is surprised to discover one of Diana's many powers is the ability to talk to trees. (And to go through six job changes within a two year span) and recognizing her as Wonder Woman, the tree warns her that a gang of nazis have hollowed out the mountain and are building bombs with which to destroy the cities of America~

Leaving her Diana prince disguise behind, Wonder Woman runs off to stop the villains when a couple of children freezing cold and on the run from nasty nazis, the pair find themselves on the mountaintop with the lone tree which moves to reveal Dianas disguise, so they can use her coat to stay warm.

Diana kicks butt and the nazis, out to destroy the tree for betraying their villainous plans, blow up the entire mountain! Fortunately, the tree is able to protect the children while continuing to narrate our story, its fate certain...Until Wonder Woman stops an avalanche, saves the kids, saves the tree and carries that tree off to safety and replanted it so that it may live on! The top of the tree had broken off during the explosion, and the childrens family turned around and used it as a christmas tree to celebrate the holidays.

Not the most important of characters, but that Fir introduced another of Wonder Womans fun abilities, and made for a fun christmas story to boot. ^^

Day 22: Fifi La Strange and Agent Malone

It is a bit odd to name two characters for a character of the day, but it is impossible to talk about one without at least referencing the other.

Fifi La Strange is a famous actress who appears in countless movies. Shes a social mover and shaker who involves herself with all kinds of people, and is known to travel the country on a whim, doing whatever catches her fancy and socializing with the wealthiest and the shadiest.

Agent Malone is a federal agent. One of the best in the agency for her ability to track down the most untouchable of criminals, and bring them to justice. She is a skilled shot with a six shooter and impossible to fool.

The pair of them also happen to be identical twins. Able to perfectly pass for one another, the pair of them will combine their talents, using the authority of one and the social connections of the other, the pair of them work together to make the world a safer place and put away criminals.

Allies of Wonder Woman, the pair of them would be awesome to see reintroduced into the mythos.

Year of Wonder Woman Empty Re: Year of Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman character of the day

Day 23: Rebla
First, let us just take a moment to appreciate the naming schemes of the golden age. And how shocked her parents must have been when Rebla grew up to be a rebel. And how nobody saw this coming.

Born of the planet eros, Rebla ranked amongst its best. She was easily the most brilliant scientific mind, she was the worlds greatest athlete, her grasp of politics and judicial proceedings were unrivaled, and everyone adored and respected her, citing her as the next great ruler of the planet.

Despite those expectations though, Rebla was someone who dested taking on a leadership role, and desired a submissive life of following orders, doing what she was told and focusing on her experiments and dating rather than assuming the position of authority everyone wanted her to take.
Her time for games came to an end when she was summoned by Queen Marya, and commanded to become the ruler of trans mountania, a mountainous region of the world where the gender ratios were reversed. The story never actually says it, but its heavily hinted at being a community of transexuals.

Thus, Rebla came to rule what was a quarter of the planet, and dealt with the political matters facing the nation. Managing trade disputes and legal knots and sports regulations, Rebla was faced with constant demands from a job which she did not want, with no time to focus on her desires to further the world of science. Angered by her planets system of governance, Rebla revolted, leading Trans mountania at war with the rest of the planet, with intention to conquer it so that she may change the laws, so that she could go back to being a submissive member of society instead of one of its rulers.

Naturally, she did not want to hurt anyone because she was a rational mind. Thus she invented a weapon known as a paralysis ray which worked through electrical current to freeze people, making them incapable of movement with Rebla being the only one capable of reversing its effects.
Thanks to her brilliant invention and tactical mind, Rebla quickly conquered most of the planet until Wonder Woman arrived to save the day, only to discover that Reblas invention was so great, that even Wonder Woman was not immune to its effects.

Having Diana in her clutches, Rebla explained her goal was to make everyone equel and do away with the system of laws and governence so that everyone would just spend their days having fun. Wonder Woman countered by asking Rebla when the last time it was that she spent doing any of those things, and pointed out that she spent this whole time leading a campaign, accusing Rebla of not wanting to be commanded by others.

Rebla, outraged at the realization that she was in charge, ordered the master of her dungeons to lock her away as well and treat her like one of the other prisoners, and was shocked to discover that she was being treated poorly, having been brought up in a dom/sub social system where mistreatment was not tolerated. Realizing her mistake, Rebla freed Wonder Woman who proceeded to undo Reblas rebellion, and presented her before queen Marya

Marya, realizing her mistake in forcing Rebla into a position she did not want, made her the royal scientist, and ordered her to focus on advancing the fields of science, which Rebla gleefully accepted, resolving the whole dilemma.

Rebla presents an interesting topic regarding Wonder Woman that I feel often gets misunderstood. And that is themes of BDSM in relation to Wonder Woman.

A negative repuation many people saddle Wonder Woman with is claiming that the depictions of her in bondage are erotic in nature and are meant to play to Marstons interests in the subject. While this is partially true, people are greatly over simplifying things, and the images in question are generally taken out of context.

Though admittedly, it is not helped that themes of bondage and dominance are used in multiple ways in Marstons run, with the actual purpose behind them differing based on context.
However, it can all easily be broken down into three categories which are plain and easy to recognize.

1. A villain ties up Wonder Woman.
Marston was not a fan of contests of strength about two people mindlessly punching one another until one of them falls over or fighting with swords until someone was slain. He saw it as brutish, and attributed the quality to toxic masculinity and heavy testosterone.
Thus, he wanted to make confrontations between hero and villain into something more akin to a game of cat and mouse, with a formula of the villain putting the hero in a death trap, the hero escaping, and turning around to capture the villain.

This concept would later be adopted by Jack Kirby in the use of Mister Miracle, a superhero escape artist whose villains would always put him in death traps which he was required to escape from using his wits and abilities. The only difference between the two instances is gender, with people reading far to much into Wonder Woman being tied to a log on a saw mill than it warrants.

2. Wonder Woman in chains.
Chains of iron are a symbolic theme for Wonder Woman. While rope is simply a means of tying up a criminal, chains in relation to Wonder Woman are a symbol. The first artist on Wonder Woman was famous for his work depicting symbols of womens liberty in chains. A reflection of womens liberties which were being denied to them, and how they were chained down by society. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Thus, when Baroness chained Wonder Woman down in an effort to erase Diana's agency. Or when a man literally chained his wife to a stove so she could not seek work, those chains were symbolizing oppression, and you could recognize someone as supporting oppression and fighting against womens liberties for their use of chains in Marstons work.

3. Actual bondage play.

Finally, Marston actually was interested in themes of bondage and dominance. He saw it as a healthy outlet, but stressed the need for consent. You can recognize when a scene is actually meant to be regarded as something like this when neither party is a villain, and both are consenting to it. (Which doesn't come up very often.) Marston also saw the idea of submissive and dominant play as something normal for the human psyche, though Marston believed that women were better suited to the role than men and thus, never portrayed such a scenario with a man in charge. Instead, it would more often than not be two women, which was also Marstons (by golden age standards) subtle way of speaking out in support of LGBT. A topic that not everyone in the feminist movement at the time was necessarily a fan of.

Rebla's themes fell under that third category. She wanted to answer to others and desired a more submissive role despite her talents. And she specifically wanted to submit to another woman instead of one of the trans men that made up a large percentage of her regions population.

People can try to bury these themes and erase them, pretending they were never a part of Wonder Womans mythos, but all that is doing is working to extinquish parts of what made Diana special and unique from other heroes. She confronted themes that heroes to this day are struggling at even hinting at, much less being open about. And she stood for LGBT rights at a time when no one else would.

Day 24: Carla Swanson

Carla was a victim of Paula Von Gunthers insidious brainwashing techniques. Formerly a secretary in military intelligence, Carla was kidnapped by the Baroness and over a weekend, the Baroness had broken Carlas psyche, convincing her that she had no worth, that her opinions did not matter, and that she lived only to serve the Baroness.

What Paula did to Carla was ireversible, and she became like the countless other victims of Paulas schemes. The true horror of this is that no other villain in Wonder Womans mythos has ever been able to permanently scary someone like this in such a terrible way, and it serves as evidence to the true horror of the Baroness's wicked ambitions.
