Penny Dreadful "Above the Vaulted Sky"

Post by Aeryl on Thu Jun 04, 2015 8:52 am

AKA: Almost every one is going to have sex of some dubious consensuality tonight, except for Vanessa and Ethan, that's the finale, because we are aware your television will explode when that happens, and we want you to see the rest of the season first

This isn't going to be a flat out recap, I'll leave that to the professionals at TMS, but I really wanted a space to talk about my own thoughts on it, so here we go!

There was a lot of good stuff, I really appreciated how the two scenes that involve outright rape (Malcolm and Evelyn) and dubious consent (Lily and Victor) was shown less explicitly, than the one that involved complete and enthusiastic consent, which was very steamy.

Doll with a brain - horrifying

When Vanessa touches Ethan's face- still hotter that Dorian/Angelique, sorry

The fact that Dorian and Angelique's date concluded with exactly the same moment that was concocted by John Clare to tell Lily about their imagined relationship was a nice piece of symmetry.

I can accept that Vanessa didn't recognize Lily as Brona, she only met her once and Victor's gone to great lengths to change her outward appearance. But I cannot accept that she wasn't the slightest bit creeped out by the way Lily looked at Victor like an abused puppy desperately seeking approval after her every sentence.

Lyle is Jewish!  I love him even more, and I don't even know why, but it's true.  And more flirting with Ethan!

Sembene backstory NOW

So now, back to Victor and Lily.  Look I can appreciate that he's TRYING to give her agency, to say she can make her own decisions, but he's still limiting her choices.  She's basically imprinted on him, which leaves her no choice at all.   She wants him, but she doesn't know WHAT she wants, because she has no experiences.  Victor having sex with her is terrible.

And Evelyn obviously needed Malcolm's blood to complete the spell(probably couldn't bring their kids into manifestation without it), but why drug him?  He never said they weren't going to have sex, he was just clear that sexual relations would never be legitimized with nuptials.  If she'd OPENLY said, hey let's go get a room, he'd have probably gone for it.  And WHY does she care exactly, to kill Malcolm's wife?  She has her own wealth, why does she care to kill his wife so that MAYBE Malcolm will marry her?  Is it to get closer to Vanessa?  To manipulate him into "disowning" her(FAT CHANCE he shot his actual daughter for her)?  So she can be invited into the home, past any protective barriers they may have put up, as it did when Joan invited Vanessa in?  Any theories on that?

And lastly, did that piece of amber that the words Lupus Dei were carved on look like it held a scorpion, or just an insect?

- I know that some people will be skeeved out by Viktor & Lily, but I like them.
- What was that door made of? Copper? Brass? Bronze?
- I loved Ethan's talk with the detective. A self-assured person who doesn't give anything away. Why don't we get people like that in some of my police procedurals?
- I was surprised that Vanessa didn't recognize Lily. I expected her to doubt what she thought, but I still expected some sort of recognition.
- They keep dancing around the Viktor storyline meeting up, but they never quite link it all up.
- I'm not one for M/M sex scenes (if that's what you like, more power to you, but it's not for me), but that was very well done.
- Apparently James Bond still has it.
- I think something's going to happen to Angelique, and Dorian is going to go very dark.
- Next week: Ethan goes American Werewolf in London.

Yes, Ethan's scene with the detective was PHENOMENAL.

I have a feeling the other American is going to take the fall for Ethan though. He's got "I'm gonna turn into a werewolf" written all over him.

I don't see Victor and Lily as of dubious consent. He's actually giving her more choices. He's simply bringing her along slowly, just like what he did with Proteus. I would argue that it might be just as traumatic, if not more so, for him to shove her into the full din and life of London, then for him to do what he's doing. Also, in their love making scene Victor tries to resist the temptation, but Lily isn't taking no for an answer.

Well, so might a teenager may push herself on her teacher, it's on the teacher to act appropriately and shut that down.

I agree just thrusting her into the world would be a terrible thing to have happen to her.

But neither of them HAS to have sex. She does HAVE to gain enough life experience to have informed consent, which she doesn't have right now.
