Misc. Comics Discussion Thread
This thread is dedicated to discussing comics from publishers other than the Big Two!
Copperhead and Saga are my loves from Image Comics! I really enjoyed Sundowners from Dark Horse before it vanished? SWORDS OF SORROW is amazing so far! I really love that, and Dynamite's Red Sonja run is stellar as far as I've gotten. Did Simone end her Red Sonja run?
I love how Simone took a character I'd previously disregarded and made her so freaking amazing haha!
I've also read Seconds by Bryan Lee O'Malley, which I loved.

Haha, yeah. I would never have thought to open the cover of a Red Sonja until Gail Simone took over.
So, if you haven't read Bitch Planet, I don't know what you're doing with your life. It's incredibly ambitious, wonderfully written, and unabashedly feminist. Brilliant work.
Also on my shelves are The Wicked + The Divine, Saga, Pretty Deadly, and Buffy.

Ooo, I was reading Bitch Planet, but it disappeared! I feel like I haven't seen it in months... On hiatus? I think I only read the first 3 or 4 issues.
I kind of want them to make Red Sonja movies based Simone's run of the comics... I love the campiness of the metal bikini armor. The covers and interior art are gorgeous.

Re: Misc. Comics Discussion Thread
Lazarus by Greg Rucka with Michael Lark on art is great. It centers around Forever Carlyle who's the Lazarus (basically, enforcer) to one of the ruling families who took over when the world economy collapsed. It's basically capitalism's end-game, lol. Issue 18 just came out a couple weeks ago but the 1st 3 trades should be easy to get (collecting up through #15). I do recommend the individual issues though because Rucka packs a lot of extra worldbuilding in the back-matter with the letters column that's not (if I remember correctly) in the trades.
Aside from that I agree that WicDiv, Gail's Red Sonja, and Pretty Deadly are all great. I'm way behind on Saga and haven't started Bitch Planet though.
Ooh! And Marjorie Liu (who had the great X-23 run and was the writer on the big Northstar wedding issue at Marvel) has one coming soon (November maybe?) called Monstress that's going to be about a young girl who has a mental link with a Kaiju so definitely looking forward to that!

According to Image's website, the next issue (#5) of Bitch Planet is coming out on Sept. 9. I hope it won't get postponed again - last time I checked (which was a few weeks ago), it was supposed to come out in late August.

11/04/2015,it's a triple sized version with 66 pages.
The Wicked + The Divine and Lazarus are among my favorit Image comics.I preordered the Southern Bastards TP and I'm looking to get Pretty Deadly.
Re: Misc. Comics Discussion Thread
Alex + Ada finished, so that's no longer laying claim to my money.
Whenever any Mouse Guard shows up on the shelf, I just buy it. There is no hesitation; there is no need to hesitate.
One of my favorite artists, Marian Churchland, recently started an odd new comic, 8House: Arclight. It's a strange mix of fantasy and science fiction that reminds me of something Moebius would have done.
I really want to catch up on Lazarus, and to a lesser degree, Saga. I read one issue of Lazarus and got hooked, but they were already many issues ahead of me by that time, and I don't have the money to get more titles than I already am. I guess I'll have to save up for the trades...
Since I gave up on Conan the Barbarian (can't bring myself to read Brian Wood any more after his harassment of female artists came to light), I wanted to find a replacement for my sword & sorcery fix. Red Sonja seemed like a natural - and by Gail Simone, no less - but I picked up one or two issues and wasn't really into it. In addition, the slavish attachment to the chainmail bikini (even Conan wears outfits other than the archetypical loincloth) and her backstory seriously bugs me. I can't get past the whole "only the man who defeats me can bed me" objectification thing. I dunno - I guess worse has been done with Wonder Woman. What do you Red Sonja fans think, am I mistaken in my distaste? Did I just read the wrong issues?

The first arc has her mostly in the chainmail bikini, but after that she wears other clothes that are more practical/realistic for the environments she travels to. I've only read about 10 or so issues or Gail's run, but I loved it so much. It's why I picked up swords of sorrow.
I liked the first arc (and I don't remember the whole "beat me, bed me" thing in Simone's run ever). Sonja herself is a pretty raunchy/sexual character though, and Simone doesn't shy from that. She does it in a fun way though. I really enjoyed it. I don't know what past takes on Sonja have been (this was my first experience) but Simone has made her openly bisexual in that she's been interested in/propositioned people of both genders.
I also liked the female adversary Simone gave her in the first arc... I forget her name. The one who was a slave with her, with the white dreads. I'd love to see her again. Did Simone's run with Sonja end?

The best-to-bed thing doesn't turn up in Gail's run, though the bikini never truly goes away.
Her run ends very soon, I believe it might even be the next issue?

Yes, that's the one! I thought she provided a lot of good turmoil and development for Sonja/the story. And the thing with the spirits was cool.
And boo that Simone's run is ending.

Re: Misc. Comics Discussion Thread
I read the first issue of Monstress and I have to say, beautiful art aside, that I don't like it.In fact, after finishing,my initial reaction was to contact my comic book store and cancel my subscritption. The story involves a lot of cannibalism and body disembowelled, two big no no's on my list. After my first reaction,I decided to give it a shot and see how it will evolve.
+: -all the major characters are women
- the protagonist is disabled, before the book starts, she has had half of an arm cut off
-beautiful art
-mongolian inspired clothes and hairsytles, that's a very big plus for me
-: -the standard manga trope "ugly=evil"
- a lot of gore and violence
-the standard trope "sexy woman = evil woman"
- some parts are confusing,I still don't know why there's even a war

Re: Misc. Comics Discussion Thread
I'm reading Dragon Age: Magekiller from Dark Horse because Dragon Age, duh. It's written by Greg Rucka, who is my wife's favorite Wonder Woman writer, so there's also that. It's not bad. The artwork kinda doesn't quite work for me, which is unfortunate because Dragon Age has such gorgeous concept art to work from. It's technically proficient, but I don't feel Carmen Carnero quite nails it; like someone who's used to drawing modern day stuff suddenly doing fantasy. It's good enough to keep reading, but I want it to be better; I think I'm holding it to very high standards due to the quality of the source material, though. Oh, and the covers by Sachin Teng definitely deserve praise.
Speaking of fantasy and fantasy artists, I must hang my head in shame. One of my favorite fantasy comic artists, Marian Churchland, is writing a fantasy comic (and drawing the covers) called From Under Mountains, published by Image Comics, and I have yet to buy a single issue. What is wrong with me?* Do I need to have Marian drawing it as well as writing it? Yet somehow I haven't quite been drawn to it, and I can't put my finger on why. It glowers at me every time I walk past it at the comics shop, and I feel a deep pang of guilt, knowing I'm betraying her.
Also, in a quieter voice, The Autumnlands does the same thing. The art looks good, it's fantasy with anthropomorphic animals and people, Kurt Busiek's writing it...it's something I would expect me to read. Why haven't I picked it up?
*Okay, obviously some of it has to do with not being able to drop $50 every time I go to the comics store, but still - I'm a fantasy guy, not a superhero guy. So why is everything** I'm reading now superheroes?
**Well, that and Star Wars stuff.

I don't know! I haven't read it!
Based on the covers and the pages I've flipped through, it looks like a fairly low-key fantasy story that looked to me like a slightly-less Tolkienish but not entirely non-European setting involving stuff happening in a village; I didn't see any battles or giant monsters, mostly people having quiet conversations. The art-style is actually quite close to Marian Churchland's own; at first I thought it was hers with a different inker.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] says about the first issue, "In the first issue of this new fantasy series, old feuds and new monsters rise up to haunt the isolated northern fortress of Karsgate."

She's done one other graphic novel, called Beast, which I haven't read, either. I became a fan of hers almost solely through her website, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], where she's posted a lot of her artwork, some of it Skyrim and Dragon Age-related. Oh! But I did get a couple of issues of a very weird sci-fantasy comic called [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], which she did one or two issues of.

Re: Misc. Comics Discussion Thread
Well, I decided to take the initiative and rectify my negligence. Also, a new comics store opened up in the Des Moines area (which means we have something like 5 stores here now), and they had From Under Mountains #1 and 2 on hand, so I popped over to patronize them.
I'm still reading the first issue, so I can't comment on the story yet, but my concerns about the artwork are valid, I think. It's not terrible, but it's not great, either; downright student-quality in some spots. I hope it gets better as it goes.
While at this new store (Black Medicine Comics), I got an eyeful of the shelves and realized there's more out there that I'd like to read than I had originally concluded. Among them was another comic that I was wishy-washy about for no real good reason, Jim Henson's The StoryTeller: Dragons from Archaia:

Again, exactly the sort of thing I should love: based on an old TV show I remember from my youth that I LOVED, and traditional Western fantasy subject matter. But for some reason, when I saw it at my usual comics haunt, I decided to give it a pass. Something has definitely been wrong with me lately, because that cover is fantastic.
Well, in my latest comics run I picked up the third issue in the series (looks like a series of four issues). The artwork in this particular issue, by Hannah Christensen, piqued my interest:

EDIT: Another nice thing about this series: based on what I'm seeing in Issue #3, each issue is a stand-alone story. Yay!
I picked up Dragon Age: Magekiller #3, too. In general, it's okay, but this latest issue, which takes place at the same time as Dragon Age: Inquisition, really feels like DA:I fan-fiction. I felt like they had an opportunity to show rifts in the Fade in a way that would be really unusual or visually interesting that differed somehow from the way the game usually portrays it, but instead it's just a bog-standard Fade-rift with demons around it in a tilled field. Not only did it look like something straight out of the game (in a not-particuarly-good way), it just seemed...meh. I keep getting the feeling that they have the freedom to do something that the video game couldn't or didn't do, but instead it's just kind of going through the motions. Also, I feel like Rucka spends an unnecessary amount of time on belabored narration; this issue had the talkative character recounting the events of the last two issues, and I'm thinking, "Yes, I know, I read them. Can we talk about something I don't know yet?"
I'm still reading it, so perhaps it'll turn around in the second half of the issue...?
